Rolus in the Outskirts is reminiscent of Newgrounds games from 15-20 years ago with a more modern lick of a paint. The combat and enemy variety has enough variety to it to not get stale, but I wouldn't call it deep enough to be the highlight either. That would be the writing - it's just irreverent and edgy enough to charm, but not too much to feel forced. Characters have good designs and writing and Rolus himself is definitely cute. The music and sound design are also excellent.
Some gripes I did have:
- Rolus froze up on me once. Dunno how it happened, but luckily there's a suicide button.
- Pushing objects is used only once. It's not super hard to figure out that you have do it, but it's not quite intuitive as is either. Just stick a can somewhere where you can't avoid it and the problem should fix itself.
- Combat needs more to it to sustain an entire game. Granted it's a demo, but it's something to keep in mind for the full game.
These are all relatively minor gripes in the grand scheme of things though, so I eagerly await the final release.
